Punjabi Driving Lessons in Abbotsford: What to Expect

Why Punjabi Driving Lessons Matter
Abbotsford is home to one of the largest Punjabi-speaking communities in British Columbia. For many adult learners — especially those who recently immigrated or whose primary language at home is Punjabi — learning to drive in English adds an unnecessary barrier on top of an already stressful experience.
At Ardas Driving School, we offer driving lessons fully in Punjabi (ਪੰਜਾਬੀ) at no extra charge. The same curriculum, same dual-control vehicles, same ICBC-certified instructors — just taught in Punjabi.
Who Are These Lessons For?
- Recent immigrants — adult learners who hold an international driving licence and need to convert to a BC Class 5, or who are starting from a Learner's licence
- Heritage speakers — Canadian-born students whose home language is Punjabi and who absorb new technical concepts faster in Punjabi
- Older adults — parents or grandparents who want to learn to drive but have struggled with English-only instruction
- Anyone who is more comfortable asking detailed questions in Punjabi than in English
What's Different About Punjabi Lessons?
Functionally, nothing — same lesson structure, same time slots, same vehicles, same price ($55 per 60-minute Driving Class, $525 for the 10-Class Package). What's different:
- The instructor speaks fluent Punjabi and switches to English only when teaching official ICBC vocabulary you'll need to recognize on the road test
- Road signs and traffic terms are explained in both Punjabi and English so you can connect the concepts
- You can ask questions, share concerns, or describe what felt wrong about a maneuver in Punjabi without translating in your head first
- Test-day prep is also in Punjabi — your instructor will run through what to expect at the ICBC office in your first language
Can I Take the ICBC Road Test in Punjabi?
The ICBC road test itself is conducted in English. Examiners give all instructions in English and you'll need to understand basic English directions ("turn left at the next intersection", "park at the curb", "make a three-point turn here"). However:
- The vocabulary list is small and learnable. We provide a one-page Punjabi-English glossary for road test instructions.
- If you fail to understand an instruction during the test, you can ask the examiner to repeat it. They will.
- The ICBC knowledge test (the written one for your Learner's licence) is available in Punjabi. You can take that test in your first language.
Hindi Lessons Too
The same applies to Hindi (हिन्दी). Many Abbotsford families have one parent who prefers Punjabi and another who prefers Hindi, or students who switch between both at home. Our instructors cover both languages on the same booking system.
